The Nigeria Police Force in Enugu State has kicked off activities for the 2026 National Police Week with a large-scale sanitation exercise, as the State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, called for stronger collaboration between residents and law enforcement.

The exercise, held on Monday at Old Park in Enugu, saw police officers working alongside members of the public to clean key areas of the state capital as part of efforts to promote environmental hygiene and deepen trust between the police and the community.

Speaking during the event, CP Giwa emphasised the importance of public support in enhancing security across the state.

“Residents in Enugu State and other nearby environs have been urged to support the police in ensuring adequate security of lives and property as partners in the progress of the state,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, the police boss noted that the sanitation drive aligns with the theme of this year’s Police Week.

“Today, being the 30th of March 2026, is the 2nd edition of Nigeria Police Week. Recall that last year at exactly this time, we were also here to commemorate the Police Week. This year’s Police Week, we have a lot of programs earmarked for the week at the Force Headquarters level, State Command level, Area Command level, and Divisional Command level. We are kickstarting it with this sanitation exercise.

“The title for this year’s event is Community Partnership and Public Trust,” Giwa stated.

He pointed out that the participation of members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) reflects the growing synergy between the police and the public.

“You can see that, apart from having police officers here, we also have members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC)… As we are in Holy Ghost kickstarting the programme with sanitation, you can see that we have some trucks where we park all the refuse that we have cleaned up here through wheelbarrows. We will now push it into the trucks,” he added.

The Commissioner also praised the cleanliness of Enugu State, attributing it to the attitude of residents and the commitment of the government.

“Enugu State is known to be one of the cleanest states in the country. They do not joke with sanitation, as they take it seriously. We are in a marketplace that is very busy but not littered with refuse as seen in other states because of the clean nature of the state,” he said.

Also speaking, the state Chairman of the PCRC, Rev. Bright Nnamdi Alaribe, commended the police command for its proactive engagement with the public.

He noted that the sanitation exercise forms part of a broader lineup of activities for the week, including a town hall meeting aimed at strengthening police-community relations.

“Today is Police Day, and you can see the Commissioner carrying refuse and removing items to participate in the exercise. We have also a town hall meeting on community partnerships and building trust, which we want people to participate in and see that the police actually mean well for us. I urge all the citizens to cultivate the habit of keeping the city clean,” Alaribe said.

The 2026 National Police Week will feature a series of activities, including a medical outreach, walkathon, public sensitisation, presentation of cheques to families of fallen officers, and a grand finale with ceremonial parade and tactical displays.
