Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has officially resigned from his position to pursue his ambition of contesting the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 elections.
The development was confirmed on Monday in a brief statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
“The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed,” Ebienfa said.
Prior to his resignation, the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had disclosed Tuggar’s political intentions, affirming his readiness to join the governorship race in Bauchi State.
“The minister is interested and aspires to run for the governorship seat of Bauchi State,” Abdulkadir stated.
Addressing questions on the timing of the resignation, he noted that Tuggar would comply with electoral guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“There is a timetable released by INEC that stipulates all the rules and regulations for running; he (Tuggar) will adhere to this,” he added.
Tuggar’s exit from the cabinet comes amid a wave of political preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several appointees expected to step down to pursue elective positions.
