The Enugu State Police Command has disbursed a total of N52.97 million (Fifty-two million, nine hundred and seventy-one thousand, eight hundred and three naira, nine kobo) to families of deceased officers, as part of welfare support under the Nigeria Police Force.
The cheques were presented on Thursday during activities marking this year’s Police Week by the Commissioner of Police, Bitrus Giwa, who said the gesture aligns with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police.
Addressing the next of kin, Giwa cautioned against reckless spending of the funds.
“Avoid the temptation of spending the money recklessly as some people will come to you with scrupulous business proposals,” he warned.
He further advised beneficiaries to take time before making financial decisions.
“Take the money, have a serious reflection before investing it wisely because opportunity like this will not come again. Don’t spend the money frivolously, rather invest it into what will be beneficial to you and your family,” he added.
The police commissioner also conveyed condolences on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, sympathising with the families over the loss of their loved ones.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Rev. Charles Ugwuagu,

Regent of Oboji Ngwo Autonomous Community, expressed appreciation to the police authorities for the gesture.
He thanked the Inspector General of Police and the command “for the work they’re doing and for the regard for their deceased colleagues,” and prayed for continued blessings on the Nigeria Police Force.

Ugwuagu also assured that the beneficiaries would make prudent use of the funds, pledging that “they’ll do their best to put the money to judicious use.”
