Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deepen Nigeria’s economic and trade partnership with China, describing the relationship as critical to the country’s long-term growth and stability.
Kalu made the call on Friday, April 3, 2026, while hosting the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, at a private pre-Easter dinner in Abuja.
The former Abia State governor said the engagement provided an opportunity for both sides to explore areas of mutual benefit.
“We had a warm and fruitful discussion centred on expanding mutual opportunities between Nigeria and China,” Kalu said.
Highlighting Nigeria’s economic priorities, the lawmaker stressed that stronger ties with China would unlock critical investments and technological advancement.
“Building stronger ties with China will create greater investment flows, boost trade volumes and enhance technology transfer, all of which are essential to Nigeria’s long-term economic stability,” he added.
Kalu described China as one of Nigeria’s most reliable economic partners, particularly in infrastructure development.
“China has consistently financed and executed major infrastructure projects in Nigeria, spanning rail, power and construction,” he noted, adding that increased Chinese investment would stimulate local industries and create jobs.
He further outlined the broader benefits of a strengthened bilateral relationship.
“A robust Nigeria–China relationship will deliver increased foreign direct investment, access to affordable financing and accelerated development of critical infrastructure,” he said.
The senator also urged the Federal Government to create a more enabling environment for investors.
“Nigeria must position itself as a favourable destination for international investors by ensuring policy consistency, improving the ease of doing business and strengthening diplomatic engagements,” Kalu stated.
According to him, proactive leadership and strategic global partnerships remain key to navigating today’s complex economic landscape.
The meeting with Ambassador Yu, he added, underscores his commitment to advancing Nigeria’s international partnerships as a pathway to economic transformation.
