The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has resigned from her position, becoming the first member of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet from the South-East to step down ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Onyejeocha announced her resignation in a letter shared on April 4, 2026, just days after the March 31 deadline set by the President for political appointees seeking elective office to vacate their positions.
Although she did not disclose the office she intends to contest, she described her exit as a transition to a new phase of service.
“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I announce my resignation as Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment,” she wrote.
“This decision comes with profound gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the opportunity to serve Nigeria in his administration.”
Reflecting on her tenure, Onyejeocha said, “This period marks the end of a significant chapter in my journey of service as I formally resign as Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment.”
She also praised staff of the ministry for their contributions.
“I appreciate their dedication, professionalism, and partnership in strengthening workers’ rights, enhancing workplace safety, and expanding employment opportunities,” she added.
The former lawmaker further thanked her constituents for their continued support, stating: “As one chapter closes, another opens. I remain committed to service, to progress, and to building the Nigeria we all deserve.”
Her resignation makes her the fourth cabinet member to step down in line with the President’s directive.
Others who have resigned include the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, who is seeking the Gombe State governorship; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who has joined the Bauchi State governorship race; and the Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, who is pursuing a senatorial bid in Kebbi State.
