There was widespread jubilation in Ossomala Community, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, as the traditional ruler, Igwe Patrick Sule Ugboma, conferred chieftaincy titles on selected individuals in a colourful ceremony marking the Easter season.

The event, held on April 4, 2026—coinciding with Holy Saturday in the Christian liturgical calendar—brought together indigenes, guests, and cultural enthusiasts in a celebration that blended religious significance with rich Igbo tradition.

Speaking during the ceremony, Igwe Ugboma described the conferment of chieftaincy titles as a vital institution for preserving cultural identity and promoting community development.

“These titles facilitate community development, reinforce morals, honour outstanding individuals, and connect them to ancestral heritage,” he said.

The monarch emphasized that the honour goes beyond status, stressing the responsibility that comes with it.

“In Igbo culture, a chieftaincy title is not just a mark of wealth or status; it is a call to service, character, and responsibility,” he stated.

He explained that recipients were carefully selected from various quarters of the community based on their contributions and leadership qualities.

“Those who received chieftaincy titles were carefully selected… based on their demonstration of exceptional leadership and contribution to community development. It is to ensure that hard work is recognized,” he added.

Igwe Ugboma also used the occasion to highlight the importance of history and cultural preservation, commending the reintroduction of history into Nigeria’s educational curriculum.

“No person that is on this earth that doesn’t have history. And now they have returned it, I think we are going to the right direction… I give kudos to the government that returned history to the schools,” he said.

He further urged members of the community to embrace unity and love, drawing inspiration from the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The ceremony featured elaborate traditional displays, including cultural attire, music, and masquerades, reinforcing the community’s commitment to preserving its heritage.

“Chieftaincy titles help preserve traditional practices, customs, and values, ensuring continuation for future generations of our community, Ossomala,” the monarch added.
