Late Honourable Chief (Chinenyeze) Charles Chukwuma Ani (Douglass)

The Umukoloma Development Union (UDU) has formally announced the passing and burial arrangements of its revered patriarch, Honourable Chief (Chinenyeze) Charles Chukwuma Ani (Douglass) (1938–2025), describing his death as the end of an era marked by service, courage, and transformative leadership.

In an official statement signed by the Chairman of UDU, Chief Michael Ani, the union said it received the news of his passing which happened on the 30th of October, 2025 with “deep sorrow but gratitude to God for a fulfilled life dedicated to the upliftment of Umukoloma and humanity at large.”

Chief Ani, born in 1938 into the family of Ozor and Mrs. Ezeanyanwu Animonyedinma Madubuko of Umueze, Umukoloma, Affa Autonomous Community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential figures in the community’s history.

According to the statement, “Chief Charles Chukwuma Ani was not merely a man; he was an institution—an embodiment of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to justice and development.”

His early life reflected determination and grit, as he reportedly funded his education through menial activities such as snail hunting at a time formal education was not widely embraced in his community. He attended St. John’s Catholic Primary School, Affa (1947–1956), and later passed his First School Leaving Certificate with distinction at St. Paul’s Catholic School, Eke.

Before venturing into public service, he trained in trading in Onitsha under his uncle and mentor, an experience that shaped his discipline and entrepreneurial mindset.

Recognised early for his intellect and leadership qualities, he briefly served as a teacher between 1957 and 1958, becoming the pioneer teacher at St. Michael’s Primary School, Amofia-Imezi, Affa.

In 1959, he joined the Nigerian Railway Corporation as a labourer and steadily rose through the ranks to become a Special Locomotive Driver Grade I, operating express trains. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Locomotive Drivers’ Union in Enugu, demonstrating leadership beyond his primary duties.

The union further noted that Chief Ani played a significant role during the Nigerian Civil War, serving as Second-in-Command of the BOLF Home Group of the Biafran Army. Despite the challenges of war and work, he pursued further education and obtained his WASCE/GCE in 1985.

After retiring from the Nigerian Railway Corporation in 1993, he devoted himself fully to community development and political service. He served as PDP Ward Chairman (Affa/Ikono/Oghu Ward), Supervisory Councillor for Works, Chairman of the Rural Development Programme (1998–2000), and became the first Onowu of Affa Ancient Kingdom from Umukoloma, a position he later relinquished to encourage younger leadership.

Highlighting his legacy, the statement emphasised his courageous intervention in the 1970s that saved three sons of Umukoloma from wrongful execution by a military firing squad.

“Through his influence, legal intervention, and unwavering courage, he secured the release of innocent sons of the community who had been falsely accused. That singular act remains one of the most defining moments of his legacy,” the statement read.

The union also credited him with preserving critical pre-war legal documents of the community, spearheading the establishment of Umukoloma Primary School, contributing to the formation of the Umukoloma Development Union (Enugu Branch), and safeguarding communal resources.

“His life was defined by service above self, justice without compromise, and leadership rooted in integrity. His passing leaves a vacuum that will be difficult to fill, but his legacy will continue to guide generations,” Chief Michael Ani stated.
