U.S. President Donald J. Trump has announced a proposed two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, following high-level discussions with leaders from Pakistan.

In a statement dated April 7, Trump disclosed that the decision followed conversations with Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and the country’s Chief of Army Staff, Asim Munir.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan… they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran,” Trump said.

He explained that the ceasefire is conditional on Iran agreeing to reopen a critical global shipping route.

“Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided ceasefire,” he stated.

Trump noted that the move comes after what he described as the achievement of key military objectives and significant progress toward a broader peace deal.

“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East,” he said.

According to him, Iran has already submitted a proposal forming the basis for negotiations.

“We received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to,” Trump added.

He emphasized that the two-week window would allow both sides to finalize and formalize the agreement.

“A two-week period will allow the agreement to be finalized and consummated,” he said.

Expressing optimism, Trump described the development as a major step toward resolving long-standing tensions in the region.

“On behalf of the United States of America… it is an honor to have this long-term problem close to resolution,” he said.
