A former Governor of Kano State and ex-senator representing Kano South, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move seen as a major shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gaya formally announced his resignation in a letter dated April 5, 2026, addressed to the APC ward chairman in Gaya Local Government Area, stating that his decision takes immediate effect.
According to him, the move followed extensive consultations and careful reflection on his political future and the interests of his constituents.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to the party for the platform it provided me and for the cooperation and camaraderie extended over the years,” he said.
The resignation was officially acknowledged by the Gaya Arewa Ward APC chairman, Adam A. Adam.
Confirming his next political move, Gaya disclosed that he has now joined the ADC, aligning himself with key political figures working to reposition the party in Kano State.
He noted that he maintains a cordial relationship with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, adding that both leaders are collaborating to strengthen the ADC and enhance its electoral chances in the state.
Gaya’s defection comes shortly after a similar move by Gawuna, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Kano, signaling a growing wave of high-profile exits from the ruling party.
Political observers say the development could significantly reshape Kano’s opposition dynamics, as influential figures realign ahead of the next election cycle.
A seasoned politician, Gaya previously served as Governor of Kano State between 1992 and 1993 during the Third Republic under the National Republican Convention, before going on to represent Kano South Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly.
His latest move underscores mounting political recalibrations in Kano, as parties and power blocs begin early positioning for 2027.
