A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained its high-level visit to leaders of a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja, citing growing pressure on opposition parties across Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP faction said the visit was a show of solidarity following what it described as “recent political attacks” targeting opposition groups.
“The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) paid a solidarity visit to the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the recent political attacks targeted at Nigeria’s opposition parties,” the statement read.
According to the party, the development signals a broader trend affecting multiple opposition platforms.
“The PDP acknowledged the growing and shared threat confronting opposition political parties in the country, noting that similar pressures have been experienced by the PDP in recent times,” it added.
The delegation, led by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, included prominent party figures such as Adolphus Wabara, Jerry Gana, and Babangida Aliyu.
They were received by key ADC leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi.
The PDP delegation stressed the need for vigilance in safeguarding democratic principles.
“The delegation emphasised the need vigilance in the face of actions capable of undermining democratic principles and political plurality,” the statement said.
Responding, the ADC leadership welcomed the visit and echoed concerns about the state of democracy in the country.
“The ADC leadership expressed appreciation to the PDP for the visit and reiterated the existential threat facing democracy in Nigeria, particularly through the targeted weakening of major opposition parties,” the statement noted.
Both parties agreed on the need for continued collaboration to defend democratic institutions and preserve political plurality in Nigeria.
