A senior Nigerian Army officer, Brigadier-General O. Braimah, has reportedly been killed following a deadly attack by Boko Haram insurgents on a military formation in Benesheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.
The late officer was said to be the Brigade Commander of the Joint Task Force stationed in the area, with sources indicating that the attack occurred on Thursday night when heavily armed insurgents stormed the base in large numbers.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that several insurgents were also neutralised during the fierce exchange of gunfire, although the exact casualty figures remain unclear.
A local resident, identified as Mallam Lawa Benesheikh, confirmed the development in a social media post, lamenting the loss.
“Innalillahi wa Inna’illaihin raji’un. Boko Haram has again, unfortunately, succeeded in eliminating the commanding officer of Benishiehk.
“This unfortunate incident occurred yesterday night when the insurgent stormed the military formation in numbers. May the souls of the fallen heroes rest in peace,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area, Hon. Zanna Ajimi, said the Brigade Commander was among those killed in the attack.
“Yes, we just left the military base now, and I can confirm to you that the brigade commander is among the casualties,” Ajimi stated.
The attack marks another major blow in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the North-East, raising fresh concerns over the security situation in the region.
