Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has ratified its reviewed constitution and directed the conduct of elections for its Lagos and Abuja chapters within 90 days.
The decisions were reached at the organisation’s General Assembly held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Enugu, marking a significant milestone in its institutional reforms and internal restructuring efforts.
The adoption of the new constitution followed a motion moved by Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma and seconded by Chief Ejiofor Onyia, effectively concluding a long-standing constitutional review process initiated under the leadership of Senator Azuta Mbata.
The development is widely regarded as a major achievement for the Mbata-led administration, which has steered the affairs of the apex Igbo body for less than 15 months.
As part of resolutions reached at the Assembly, the organisation mandated its National Executive Committee (NEC) to organise elections into its Lagos and Abuja chapters within 90 days, in a move aimed at strengthening its national structure and ensuring broader representation.
The high-level meeting attracted a wide array of prominent Igbo leaders and stakeholders, including Eze E. C. Okeke, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzo, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, and Eze Linus Nto Mba.
Other dignitaries present included the Deputy President General, Prince Okey Nwadinobi; Secretary-General, Emeka Sibeudu; Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu; and former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, among several others.
The Assembly featured extensive deliberations on issues affecting the Igbo nation and concluded with closing prayers led by Professor Ossy Nwebo.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, the organisation described the outcomes as pivotal to strengthening its internal governance and advancing the collective interests of the Igbo people.
