The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices(POCACOV) which is a Community Policing, Public Relations and transformatory tool of the Nigeria Police Force Under the Inspector General of Police IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu and geared towards setting a new direction based on the clear recognition that the Nigeria Police Force cant do it alone but with different stakeholders which is away from Core law enforcement approaches.
It is an initiative that is aimed at saving our youths from the Claws of Cultism, Thuggery, Sexual and Gender Based Violence, Substance Abuse and other Vices through Advocacy, Awareness Creation, Sensitization and Re-Orientation as well as through School and Community Outreaches in the Country amongst others.
The initiative became necessary according to the Inspector General of Police IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, because deep-rooted socially-driven crimes like Cultism, Sexual and Gender Based Violence, Substance Abuse, Thuggery and other vices are best mitigated through a strategy that is premised on community policing practices which encourages building partnership towards addressing delinquencies that threaten our communal values.
To this end,the POCACOV Volunteer Club of the safer school and safer Community Partnership of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices(POCACOV) is aimed at mobilizing the youths and communities for safe and secured environment in line with the tenets of the community oriented Policing because according to Robert Peel of the Scotland yard police and I quote; “POLICE ARE THE PUBLIC AND THE PUBLIC ARE THE POLICE.”
POCACOV being a community policing tool, is also consulting with the stakeholders through POCACOV Volunteer Club Scheme of the Safer school/Community Partnership as well as mobilizing the youth and bringing them closer to their police to trigger National development as intelligence will be shared through that process.
POCACOV Volunteer Club is a platform of engagement that is providing strategic leadership and also providing better alternatives for our youths so that they will see in clear terms, dangers inherent in cultism, sexual and gender based violence, substance abuse, thuggery and other vices and the need to keep away from them and thereby becoming better citizens that will contribute to National Development and Security of the nation.
The efforts of the Nigeria Police Force Under the Inspector General of Police requires an applaud for coming out with an initiative that is dedicated to Nigerian Youths and aimed at making them better citizens through a strategy that is premised on community policing.
What is required now is the Support of all stakeholders and their involvement in this all important campaign by the Nigeria Police Force.
The IGP M.A Adamu POCACOV Resource Centre, Enugu in line with the directives of the Inspector General Of Police is developing a network and platform for engagement of all the Chief Security officers, Public Relations officers as well as heads of Universities, Colleges of Education and Polytechnics across the Country under the POCACOV VOLUNTEER CLUB SCHEME of the Safer School/Community Partnership in line with the tenets of the community oriented Policing and which will strengthen school/community safety.
The Government and Non Governmental Organizations, The Media, Youth and Faith Based Bodies and groups, Community Based Organizations, Market Organizations, Traditional Rulers, Development Partners, Ministries, Department and Agencies, Parents, Guardians and caregivers, National Orientation Agencies amongst others are expected to throw their weight for the overall actualization of security and safety of our environment and making our youths responsive as well as saving them from the claws of these vices mentioned above.
