…Calls on all relevant stakeholders to join in the campaign against rape.

The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), has commended the Nigeria Senate and its leadership for passing the anti-sexual harassment bill describing it as “a bold step aimed at protecting the vulnerable ones from sexual predators.”

The Senate on Tuesday passed the bill on sexual harassment in tertiary institutions after reading it for the third time.

The bill titled: ‘A Bill for an Act to prevent, prohibit and redress Sexual Harassment of students in tertiary educational institutions and for matters concerned therewith, 2019’, was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President,. Ovie Omo-Agege, and 106 other senators.

The bill, with 25 clauses, seeks to promote and protect ethical standards in tertiary institutions. It also seeks to protect students against sexual harassment as well as prevent sexual harassment of students by educators in tertiary institutions.

The bill also proposes up to 14 years jail term for offenders.

The National Coordinator of POCACOV, CSP Ebere Amaraizu, who gave the commendation, said the bill “is a positive development and from positive direction, the bill is a clear demonstration of Distinguished Senators sensitivity on the issue of Sexual and Gender Based Violence as it affects our children/youths.

Amaraizu also appreciated the efforts of the Distinguished Senate President, the Deputy Senate President of the Senate and the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.

POCACOV also called on all relevant stakeholders at all level to join hands in the campaign against the deadly monster which poses a great danger to the society stating that; “On our part as a campaign body, the IGP MA Adamu POCACOV Resource Centre Enugu has developed a module for smooth operation of POCACOV Volunteer Clubs in all our Campuses and Communities for the actualization of Safe School/Community Partnership for a safe and secured Nation.

“POCACOV is a new direction and community policing tool of the Nigeria Police Force which is community driven and working with different stakeholders in line with the tenets of the community oriented policing,” Amaraizu said.
