In commemoration of the International Girl Child Day, the Nkanu Youth Council (NYC) through the office of its Vice President, Comr. Onovo Jennifer, has kicked off the celebration and empowering of the girl child.

The NYC celebration with the theme, “Pad A Girl Campaign” which started on Friday, October 9, chronicled the prequel event of the Girl Child Day Celebration at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu North LGA of Enugu State, with a solidarity walk and road show, through the Ogui Road/Presidential Road/New Layout/Ozalla High School.

The event witnessed the presence of notable dignitaries among whom were the Chairman of Enugu North LGA, Hon. Emeka Onunze(Tata), Chairman of Nkanu West LGA, Hon. Nwabueze Nnamani(Ikeoha), HRH. Igwe Crescent Okafor, Chief Dr. Mrs Munachimso Ebele Nweke(Kpakpando), Mrs. Miriam Delima(from Ghana), Hon. Vincent Ozougwu(Deputy Mayor of Enugu North LGA), The Leadership of NANS Zone B & Enugu JCC, amongst other youth leaders, student activists, and beauty queens.

At the course of the program, Hon. Nwabueze Nnamani, the Mayor of Nkanu West LGA and Hon. Emeka Onunze, Mayor of Enugu North LGA, all made commendable cash donations to NYC to support her academic empowerment initiative called Nkanu Youth Council Scholarship Board(NYCSB) while one of the matrons of the organization, Chief Dr. Munachimso Ebele Nweke(CEO, Munachimso Foundation) sponsored the scholarship of 50 secondary school students of Ozalla High School.

The NYCSB is an education-oriented organ of the Nkanu Youth Council set up to eradicate illiteracy through the annual empowerment of thousands of Nkanu youths, academically.

The Vice President of the organization, Comr. Onovo expressed joy and satisfaction over the success of the program.

Consequently, the president of the organization, Rt. Comr. Monday Diamond Anih, appreciated Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his immense support towards the foremost youth body and for the provision of an enabling environment in the state.

The President also commended his Vice, the Organizing Committee and other Members of the Executive Council for their zeal, coordination and proactiveness. He, on behalf of NYC, also thanked the sponsors, Mayors of Nkanu West and Enugu North, Munachim Foundation, WASHFID, Lady Care, Town Crier Initiative and other non-governmental organizations for their kind support and selfless service to the girl child and humanity.
