South East leaders have called on the leaders in the Northern Nigeria to quickly address the threat issued to Igbos living in their area.

The Governors made the call after a South East Stakeholders and strategic meeting with other political, religious and traditional institutions leaders held at the Banquet Hall of Enugu State Government House, Enugu.

Reading the communique, the Chairman of South East Governors Forum, Engr. Dave Umahi said the threat isn’t necessary as their people living in their zone are well protected.

Umahi also called on the Northerners in the zone to come out and assure their people they’re safe.

“We have noted threats by some groups in some other regions against our people of South East, while we firmly promise to protect every one either from our own region or other regions living in our place.

“We plead with the leaders of other regions to please note the threats to our people and please address the threats to our and to protect them.”

The meeting also reaffirmed their “commitment to one united Nigeria under a platform of justice, equality of rights and fairness, love and respect for one another.”

The meeting also condemned the killing of security agents in the region and the burning of strategic institutions properties, killing of civilians and urged the security agents to carry out their duties withing the rules of engagement.

They also requested the national assembly members from the South East to support the creation of State police in the ongoing constitution amendment while condemning the activities of secessionist groups in South East and other parts of Nigeria.

“We condemn in totality, the activities of violent secessionists in the Southeast and elsewhere. We firmly proclaim that we do not support them, they do not speak for South East. The impression that South East leaders are silent over some of our youths agitation for secession isn’t correct,” stressing that the leaders from the zone has been speaking out against the situation.
