World leaders have condemned the assassination of President Jovenel Moise of Haiti, yesterday.
In his reaction, US President, Joe Biden said he was “shocked” by the assassination, adding that “a lot” more information is needed.
“We are shocked and saddened to hear of the horrific assassination of President Jovenel Moise and the attack on First Lady Martine Moise. We condemn this heinous act and I am sending my sincere wishes for First Lady Moise’s recovery,” Biden said.
British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson also expressed shock and urged calm after Haiti was convulsed by Moise’s assassination.
“I am shocked and saddened at the death of President Moise. This is an abhorrent act and I call for calm at this time,” Johnson said on Twitter.
Similarly, France through its Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian condemned the “cowardly assassination,” urging restraint and calm in the Caribbean nation in the wake of his killing.
“All light must be shed on this crime, which takes place in a political and security climate that has severely worsened. I urge all those in Haitian politics to act with calm and restraint,” he said.
It will be recalled that Moïse was assassinated in a night-time attack by a group of yet-to-be-identified individuals who attacked his private residence, yesterday.
Interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph, said this in a statement.
His wife, Martine Moïse, also sustained gunshot injuries and has now been admitted into the hospital, according to local media reports.
According to Joseph, the attack occurred around 1 a.m. after a group of unidentified people, some of whom spoke Spanish and whom local media called “foreign elements” attacked the private residence of the president, fatally wounding the head of state.
The president’s residence has also corroborated the statement.
Joseph also said he was now in charge of the Caribbean French-speaking country.
Calling for calm after what he described as an “inhumane and barbaric act,” Joseph said police and armed forces had taken control of the security situation in the country.
