Floor of the Senate

The Senate has rescinded its decision on making direct primaries the only method of electing candidates by political parties.

President Muhammadu Buhari had withheld ascent to the bill saying that making direct primaries the only mode of nominating a candidate is anti democratic and might be difficult for smaller political parties without the financial means to do so.

However, the Senate during its plenary on Wednesday announced the amendment of the controversial part of the Bill.

The Upper Chamber has now amended Clause 84 to allow for direct, indirect, and consensus options of nominating party candidates for party elections.
