The convoy of a member of the House of Representatives, Magaji Da’u, was on Thursday attacked by his constituents in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State for alleged poor representation.
It was gathered that Mr Da’u, who represents Birnin Kudu/Buji federal constituency and Chairman House Committee on Power was on his way to a political event in the area when his convoy came under attack.
The aggrieved constituents suspected to be youths blocked the road, burnt tyres, mounted roadblocks in Kukuma town and prevented the lawmaker, party executive members and supporters from getting to the venue of their event over alleged poor representation at the National Assembly.
Confirming the development, police spokesperson in Jigawa, Lawan Adam, said contrary to reports that the convoy was attacked by gunmen, “the incidents was caused by mere political disagreement between warring political groups”
“The situation is under control and the police have arrested some suspects with regard to the chaos”, the police spokesperson said.
The residents hauled derogatory remarks, accusing the lawmaker of poor representation and abandoning his constituents until now that he started showing up because of the 2023 election.
An eyewitness who preferred anonymity said that hundreds of aggrieved members wielded cutlasses, sticks and other weapons.
The situation has led to a direct confrontation between the aggrieved members and supporters in the entourage of the lawmaker. In the ensuing melee, billboards and other structures that carried political symbols in the area were burnt down.
