One person have been confirmed dead and 17 others injured in a fire incident that happened at the Kalari Muna Elbadawy Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp, Maiduguri, Borno.

In a press statement on Friday, the Information Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, North East Zonal Office, Mallam Abdulkadir Ibrahim said about 100 shelters were destroyed, while dozens of households in the camps were displaced.

Ibrahim further disclosed that the inferno was suspected to have started from a cooking fire in one of the shelters.

“The fire incident is suspected to have been caused by cooking fire from one of the shelters.

“Officials of NEMA, Nigerian Red Cross Society and other stakeholders promptly responded, and administered first aid to the injured victims, as we regretted that one life was lost in the inferno”. Ibrahim stated.

He said a combined team of NEMA and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were on ground to assess the extent of destruction in the camp.
