The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abia State chapter has technically knocked out the minority leader of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Enyinaya Abaribe from the 2023 governorship race in the state.
Senator Abaribe who’s serving out his fourth term in the Senate is swimming against the tide by aspiring to replace the incumbent Governor, who hails from the same village and local government with him. Abaribe had in December 2021, informed the governor Victor Ikpeazu of his intention to replace him as the number one citizen of Gods Own State.
This aspiration might have hit the rock as the party on Saturday, announced the zoning of their governorship ticket to Abia Central and Abia North Senatorial Districts while Abaribe is from Abia South.
In a statement issued by the State PDP Chairman, Rt. Hon. Alwell Asiforo Okere on the 26th of March, 2022, the party urged all aspirants from the favoured zones to liaise with the party for presentation to the Elders of the party between 26th to 30th March 2022.
The party also announced the availability of free new membership cards adding that the old cards are no longer valid.
The statement reads:
The Peoples Democratic Party, Abia State Chapter after Wide consultations with Leaders
and Stakeholders of our Party, including the touring of the 17 Local Governments of the
State and a subsequent meeting of the state Working committee and the entire
Executive Committee resolve as follows:
That the Governorship position for 2023 Elections, be zoned to Abia Central
Senatorial District and Abia North Senatorial District.
That all those from the above mentioned zones who are aspiring for the position of Abla State Governor, should liase with the Party for presentation to the state Elders Committee between today the 26 March 2022 and latest 30th March 2022.
That the Party is appreciative of the Governor, HIs Excellency, OKezie Victor Ikpeazu, Ph.D. for the confidence he has shown in the Party and urge him to continue to show exemplary leadership and to ensure the PDP flag bearer for election 2023 emerges through a process guided by Party decisions.
The Party in another development wishes to inform our Party faithfuls that the new membership cards are available at the various local governments and are free courtesy of the Governor.
Also be informed that the old cards are no longer in use as they have expired, consequently all Aspirants and those nominating them are hereby advised to obtain the new cards for use as they fill out their nomination forms.
Finally, all Aspirants from Abia State who collected their nomination forms from
Abuja should return the forms through the State at 45 Finbarrs Road for proper documentation for use during screening.
