Joint Health Union (JOHESU), Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu chapter, has passed a vote on their current Medical Director, Prof. Monday Igwe.

Addressing newsmen on Thursday, the leadership of JOHESU in the hospital led by its Chairman, Comrade Friday Oduburu “the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu, South East Nigeria has made tremendous progress under the present administration of Professor Monday Igwe as Medical Director and Chief Executive,” adding that: “Within the first four years of his administration, the fortune of the hospital has been turned around.”

Comrade Oduburu said the vote of confidence by the members of staff of the Federal institution under JOHESU, is premised on the numerous achievements recorded by the hospital under the current administration while noting that “the once elusive cordial working and peaceful environment in the hospital has been restored under Professor Igwe’s administration.

“It is a statement of fact that years ago, we suffered crises which set the only Federal Neuropsychiatric hospital in the South East backward but God answered our prayers by enthroning the current peace-loving administration in the hospital.

“Today there is peace and a good working relationship between the management and the entire staff. Service delivery to our patients, which is our main reason for being here, has improved tremendously and this can be confirmed by the current influx of patients to the hospital.”

On the achievements of the current administration, Comrade Oduburu continued: “Prior to his assumption of office in April 2019, the poor state of affairs in the hospital was a well known fact to all the staff of the hospital as unnecessary crises negatively affected our progress.

“Also, staff welfare has been taken as a priority by the present administration, no salary arrears, no promotion arrears and staff training has become a regular occurrence to enhance productivity. Conversion of staff who have additional qualification, which was stalled by past administration, has been addressed by the present administration. Staff relationship and collaboration have improved tremendously unlike in the past where the previous management ensured that communication and relationship among staff was broken just as things are done transparently by the administration.

“It is evident that Infrastructural development under Professor Igwe has improved the status of the hospital with the entire environment now glowing with new projects. Both patients and staff are now enjoying good facilities and a healthy environment. The entire premises has been lightened up while hospital wards have been renovated with new air conditioners installed for the comfort of patients.

“The hospital’s Board Room has been fully furnished unlike what obtained in the past where Board members had no benefitting meeting place.

“Mock Professional Examination for all psychiatric doctors in the South East is now being organised in the hospital, the first of its kind in the geopolitical zone with the full support of the Federal government.

“Completion and furnishing of a 500-seater new multipurpose complex with four mini conference rooms handled by the present administration has been executed and it is now in use in addition to the completion of other projects that had been abandoned by previous administrations.

“Heavy indebtedness to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC has been settled as the hospital now enjoys steady power supply in addition to the procurement of new 100 KVA generating set and refurbishing of the existing one to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the hospital.

“There are several other ongoing projects in the hospital including water reticulation, construction and equipping of radiological complex, renovation of male and female wards and procurement of a 20-bedded isolation unit all aimed at boosting service delivery.

“It is worthy of note that all these transformations being experienced under the present administration are made possible by the unflinching support being given to the Medical Director by the quality team of management and the entire workforce who are committed to moving the hospital to enviable heights.

“It is on this premise that the entire staff of the hospital under the umbrella of Joint Health Sector Union, JOHESU, hereby call on the President Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, the Federal Ministry of Health and the entire general public to disregard the negative propaganda being sponsored by some unknown persons to discredit the present administration in the hospital.

“With the good developments currently going on at the hospital which we have not witnessed under previous regimes, there is no need for all these distractions coming from the enemies of progress and we want to state categorically that we don’t want to be taken back to Egypt. Those who are against the progress of the hospital should stop causing unnecessary crises and give peace a chance.

“Based on these laudable achievements which are verifiable, we, the entire staff of Federal Neuro-psychiatric hospital Enugu today, the 29th day of July, 2022 after exhaustive deliberations, passed a Vote of Confidence on our visionary and hardworking Medical Director, Professor Monday Igwe and urge him not to be distracted by the activities of a few selfish and enemies of progress in the hospital in the discharge of his duties.

“To our staff, we want to encourage you to continue giving your unalloyed support to the hospital management to enable us witness more positive developments and move the hospital to an enviable heights. They should be united and embrace peace which is pertinent for the progress of any organisation.”
