Fidelity Advert
President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government of Nigeria expresses deep concern over yet another unconstitutional change of government in the Republic of Burkina Faso, which ousted the military government of Paul – Henri Damiba on 3oth September, 2022.

This development is unfortunate and worrisome, as it further serves to destabilize the country and undermine efforts geared towards the restoration of constitutional order. Despite the setback, the Government of Nigeria underscores the imperative for the Burkinabe military leadership to adhere to the transitional programme put in place for the restoration of constitutional rule and return of the country to civil governance and democratic rule on 1 July, 2024.

The Federal Government of Nigeria, therefore, would unequivocally oppose any act to truncate or extend the transitional programme beyond the already established timeline for the return of power to a democratically elected government.

Furthermore, the Government of Nigeria fully supports the ECOWAS and African Union (AU) position, calling on the military leadership to adhere to the Transitional acharter.
