…It’s a case of failed robbery, says police

Properties worth millions of niara were lost at Amorka community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State as yet-to-be identified gunmen burnt over 15 shops, several trucks and cars in the area.

Sources said the hoodlums, numbering over 10, shot all through the night, while shops in the area were looted in the confusion that ensued.

Amorka is a border town to Imo State, which is a trekkable distance to most communities in the state.

“The shooting caused pandemonium as residents and travellers abandoned their shops and vehicles to scamper for safety.

“The shooting caused heavy gridlock that stretched from Amorka to Mgbidi and Awo-omma in Imo State.

“In the confusion, several shops were looted by hoodlums,” a source narrated.

However, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, told journalist101 that the incident was a case of armed robbery and arson.

He said “some criminal elements attacked  trucks on transit and dispossessed them of their personal belongings.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the criminals set the trucks ablaze out of frustration when they couldn’t get substantial amounts from the occupants of the truck. It was this fire that spread to other vehicles and shops in the area.

“Immediately the information got to us, we mobilized our personnel to the scene and we have intensified patrol in that area.”

Ikenga said there was no loss of life during the incident and some of the vehicles that weren’t affected by the fire have been recovered.
