The authorities in The Gambia say a coup has been foiled and that four soldiers are in custody, while three alleged suspects are on the run.

According to a statement released by the government, the attempt was thwarted, and that the situation has been brought under control.

This is even as there are no reports of gunshots in the capital, Banjul or other parts of the country.

The statement adds that reservists been put on alert by the government of Adams Barrow who won a re-election last December.

The president has troops from Senegal for his personal security detail, and strategic buildings such as the airport in the capital are manned by troop from Nigeria and Ghana.
