Manchester City have been confirmed as the winners of the 2022/23 Premier League title after second-placed Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

On the other hand, the impressive win also means Forest will play in the Premier League next season irrespective of the outcome of other matches this season.

The latest title was Manchester City’s third consecutive league title as Pep Guardiola matched the feat that only Sir Alex Ferguson had achieved in the history of the Premier League with Manchester United.

The Gunners, currently on 81 points and four points adrift of City, who have two outstanding games, needed to avoid a defeat against Nottingham Forest to keep the hope of winning the league at least until Manchester City play their game against Chelsea on Sunday.

But a first-half goal by Awoniyi sealed Arsenal’s fate and abruptly brought an end to the Gunners’ chase for their first league title in 19 years without City even kicking the ball. As the Super Eagles forward’s goal confirmed Manchester City as the season’s champions, it also confirmed Forest’s spot in the top-flight division at least for another season.

The goal was the 25-year-old’s ninth league goal for Forest this season.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will finish second at the conclusion of the current season with a return to the Champions League for the Gunners after seven years. They last played in the UEFA top tier Interclub competition in the 2016/17 season.
