The 36 State Governors under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) are currently converging in Abuja to discuss key national issues, including Local Government autonomy.
The meeting will be chaired by the NGF Chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State.
On Thursday, July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional for state governors to withhold funds intended for local government administrations.
The Supreme Court also prohibited state governors from dissolving democratically elected Local Government Councils across the country.
In a landmark judgment, the apex court asserted that such actions would constitute a breach of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the Supreme Court noted that the refusal of financial autonomy for Local Governments by State Governments has persisted for over two decades.
Justice Agim emphasized that Local Governments have not received the funds earmarked for them by State Governors, who act in their stead.
He ruled that the 774 Local Government Councils should manage their own funds, reiterating that only democratically elected Local Government administrations are entitled to these funds, not caretaker committees.
Other topics to be discussed include updates on the United Nations General Assembly as well as State Contribution and Shareholder Rights in the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
Also invited to present are the Minister of Health and Social Welfare and representatives from the World Bank Country Office.
