The 36 state governors across the country recently convened with National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu amid concerns about potential nationwide protests against the government, set to begin on August 1st.
The meeting took place against a backdrop of growing anxiety regarding the likelihood of unrest throughout the nation.
Following the meeting, a statement was released indicating that the governors gathered on Wednesday night to address various pressing issues.
The statement noted that the NSA briefed the governors on intelligence reports that highlighted a mounting wave of discontent and the threat of large-scale protests.
Both the governors and the NSA concurred on the necessity of bolstering security measures nationwide. The NSA pledged to assist the governors in enhancing security in their respective states.
“The NSA is dedicated to supporting the governors in strengthening the security architecture at the subnational level. The governors expressed their gratitude to the NSA and reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and properties within their jurisdictions,” the communiqué stated.
In other matters, the governors received an update from the state attorneys general regarding a recent Supreme Court ruling on local government finances.
The Nigerian Bar Association also met with the governors to discuss its new leadership and its commitment to collaborating with the states.
Additionally, the governors listened to the Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, who provided an update on progress in improving healthcare services across the country.
They welcomed the new World Bank Country Director, Mr. Ndiame Diop, who outlined plans for supporting development initiatives in the states.
