Security operatives, believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS), have raided the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over allegations that members of the organized labor sponsored the #EndBadGovernance protest.
According to DAILY TRUST, the operatives stormed the building after the Labour Union staff had left for the evening.
One of the labor leaders reported that he spoke to a private security guard assigned to the building and confirmed that the masked operatives, armed with various rifles, arrived around 10 PM.
He mentioned that the guards informed him that the operatives went directly to the 10th floor, where the office of NLC President Joe Ajaero is located.
The official added that the guard confided in him that the masked operatives later returned to the second floor, where several NLC offices are situated.
When reached for comment, the Head of Information at the NLC Headquarters, Benson Upah, told our correspondent that a statement would be issued shortly. However, he had not released the statement by the time of this report.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Department of State Services (DSS) were unsuccessful, as calls to the spokesman of the secret police, Peter Afunanya, went unanswered.
He had not yet replied to a text message sent to him as of the time of this report at around 11:15 PM on Wednesday.
Recall that on Thursday, August 1, 2024, Nigerians flooded the streets in several states and the Federal Capital Territory to protest against the rising cost of living in the country.
However, the protest escalated when some individuals began calling for regime change.
Russian flags were displayed in various parts of the country, prompting President Bola Tinubu to summon security agency leaders to Aso Rock, where he ordered them to crack down on those threatening democracy in Nigeria.
Following this directive, the DSS and other security agencies conducted a series of raids and arrested dozens of individuals.
