Youths in Bauchi State have set fire to the palace of the District Head of Lere town in the Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that the attack on the palace followed a clash between the military and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Lere.
At least one person was killed, while six others sustained injuries during the incident.
Zaharedden Mohammed, a resident of Lere who was shot in the eye during the military raid, stated that the mob who torched the palace acted on the suspicion that the district head had encouraged the military to impose a curfew on the community.
“Some youths in the campaign team had a misunderstanding with the military, and the military decided to hide behind the curfew to target certain individuals; before the curfew took effect, they launched their assault,” he said.
Another resident, Alhaji Sule Abdullahi, told Daily Trust that the youths vented their anger on the district head.
“On Wednesday, the angry youths flocked to the palace and set the buildings ablaze.”
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the District Head were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
