The Enugu State Government has announced plans to construct a large Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mother station in the Ugwu Onyeama area of the state, designed to serve the entire South East region.
This revelation was made by Dr. Obi Ozor, the Commissioner for Transportation, following a State Executive Council meeting over the weekend.
He noted that the construction of ancillary daughter stations would commence in a few weeks.
This initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to protect the environment and provide affordable transportation for its citizens.
Dr. Ozor emphasized that the state was not only introducing CNG buses but also developing the necessary infrastructure to facilitate safe and efficient operations for commuters.
He reported that the government is committed to investing in CNG buses while also encouraging private sector investment in the transportation sector.
“The Executive Council has resolved that transitioning from petrol to CNG is crucial for the state and its citizens, as it can reduce fuel costs for transportation by nearly half, thus lowering overall transportation expenses for our people,” he stated.
“All of these efforts aim to create a safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation system. This is complemented by infrastructure projects in progress, including bus terminals, enhanced bus shelters, and the implementation of smart technology in vehicles to track the whereabouts of our citizens and ensure their safety.”
“The state is actively creating a conducive environment to attract quality investors in the CNG sector, already establishing a partnership with Greenville Energy,” he added.
