Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has presented a memorandum to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review, advocating for amendments to Nigeria’s constitution.

Shared by his special adviser on media, Abdul Rasheeth, Atiku’s proposal calls for a rotational presidency between the North and South, alongside a six-year single term for both presidents and governors.

This concept is not new to Atiku; he has championed this tenure arrangement since serving as deputy to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Atiku suggests amending Section 135(2) to implement this change, stating, “The office of the President shall rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the federation on a single term of six years, alternating between the North and South.”

In addition, he proposes increasing the minimum educational qualification for political office seekers from the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination to an Ordinary National Diploma.

Moreover, Atiku recommends expanding the authority of political parties in the candidate selection process. He suggests amending Section 65(2)(b) to mandate that candidates be registered members of their party, with their names submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission at least 30 days prior to the primaries.
