The Enugu State Government has launched an extensive training program for livestock farmers in the state, focusing on both the theoretical and practical aspects of modern artificial insemination techniques and equipment.
This training will take place from November 24 to December 9, 2024, at the National Animal Production Research Institute. It is part of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s initiative to stimulate the state’s economy through the livestock sector.
Speaking to prospective trainees at the L-PRES office, State Project Coordinator Dr. Ifeyinwa Nnajieze emphasized the governor’s commitment to diversifying the state’s economy via livestock farming.
Dr. Nnajieze highlighted the significance of the L-PRES initiative, stating, “L-PRES is designed to enhance agricultural productivity in the state,” and noted that extensive measures have been implemented to boost livestock production.
“We aim to enhance livestock productivity throughout Enugu State. L-PRES consists of five key components: Institutional and Innovation System Strengthening, Livestock Value Chain Enhancement, Crisis Prevention and Conflict Mitigation, Project Coordination and Management, and Contingency Emergency Response.
“Historically, Enugu State has overlooked its livestock sector. Our goal is to revive and rejuvenate it. His Excellency is sending several representatives, including academics, small and large livestock farmers, civil servants from the Ministry of Agriculture, and veterinarians, to Zaria for essential training aimed at maximizing sector growth. We are committed to facilitating knowledge transfer, ensuring sustainability, and maintaining records for future reference. The governor is determined to involve everyone to achieve our objectives effectively and develop service providers who will train others, ensuring a wide dissemination of knowledge.”
Dr. Nnajieze also encouraged those not interested in participating to withdraw, allowing those eager to contribute towards meaningful outcomes to take their place.
She indicated that the expertise gained during the training would be instrumental in establishing an AI center in Enugu State.
Mrs. Mamel-Akpata Chinenyenwa, the Value Chain Officer of L-PRES Enugu State, outlined the training’s objectives, emphasizing its potential to enhance livestock productivity in the state.
She explained, “The training will equip Enugu-based livestock farmers with essential skills for managing artificial insemination. Participants will learn about AI center plans and equipment, gain competencies in male selection, semen collection, evaluation, processing, and preservation, and deepen their understanding of reproductive biology and breeding management principles. Proper use and maintenance of AI equipment and supplies will also be covered.”
Addressing the trainees, Dr. Enoch Nnanna, the Environmental Specialist of L-PRES Enugu State, advised them to dress appropriately, as the weather conditions there differ from those in Enugu, which could pose a distraction. He urged participants to be mindful of their attire, as cultural norms vary.
Victor Ngwu, the Permanent Secretary of the Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture, remarked on the governor’s passion for building the state’s economy, particularly through agriculture. He stressed the ambitious vision of increasing the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion and noted the significant investments made in agriculture.
He urged trainees to take the training seriously and justify the costs incurred in their education, as high expectations have been set by the state government.
Mr. Ngwu, also an agrarian, outlined the potential benefits for participants, highlighting that they have the opportunity to establish their own ranches, which could position Enugu as a leader in agriculture within Africa.
