Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has announced his plan to rally northern lawmakers in opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Zulum condemned the legislation as harmful to the northern economy, warning that its implementation would exacerbate poverty, hunger, and hardship throughout the region.
He expressed alarm over the swift movement of the proposals through the National Assembly, arguing that the reforms disproportionately benefit Lagos State, Tinubu’s political stronghold, at the expense of the economically vulnerable north.
The governor reminded the president of the crucial support the north provided during the 2023 presidential election.
“He should not overlook our concerns or the whispers that the north is turning against him,” Zulum stated.
Additionally, Zulum raised concerns about possible backdoor negotiations that could influence lawmakers to endorse the reforms.
“What we fear is that some lawmakers may clandestinely support the bills, with politicians potentially bribing or coercing their members into voting for them,” he cautioned.
