The Enugu SME Center has announced the successful completion of training for over 1,000 civil servants from the 17 local government areas of the state on digital skills.

The training, themed Digital Skills Nigeria (DSN) Training 2.0, is a groundbreaking initiative spearheaded by the Enugu SME Agency, in collaboration with FCDO and Tech4Dev, aimed at transforming the Enugu State Civil Service into a digitally proficient and efficient body.

Speaking on the completion of the programme, Arinze Chilo-Offiah, Director-General of the Enugu SME Center, remarked that the “transformative programme” reflects the “unwavering commitment” of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to digitisation.

Chilo-Offiah, who also serves as the Governor’s Special Adviser on MSMEs and Digital Economy, noted that the “intensive two-week initiative provided participants with hands-on training, equipping them with practical knowledge of essential tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other digital platforms. These skills are now invaluable for enhancing workplace productivity and driving innovation in the public sector.”

“Globally, fewer than 5% of civil servants possess advanced digital skills, compared to an industry benchmark of 8-12%, resulting in a significant efficiency gap in governance. In response, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, has introduced a progressive policy whereby digital literacy certification is now a mandatory requirement for annual promotions within the Enugu State Civil Service. This decisive action ensures our workforce is well-prepared to meet the challenges of modern governance and foster economic growth.”

He further stated that “The DSN Training 2.0, supported by FCDO and Tech4Dev, demonstrates Enugu State’s commitment to capacity building and innovation. It positions the state as a leader in public sector transformation, establishing a benchmark for digital literacy and governance excellence across Nigeria.”

“This training goes beyond mere instruction; it represents a movement to equip our civil servants with essential tools for delivering outstanding governance. By prioritising digital skills, we are cultivating a workforce capable of driving innovation and economic development in Enugu State.”

Chilo-Offiah also expressed gratitude to the 15 expert tutors and the entire Enugu SME Team, whose hard work and dedication contributed to the resounding success of this initiative.

“Tomorrow is here, and Enugu State’s civil servants are poised to lead the way towards a brighter, more efficient future. Together, we are shaping a legacy of innovation and progress.”
