A bold initiative aimed at fostering the academic and vocational development of young people has been launched by the non-governmental organisation, Youth Development and Skill Support Foundation (YDSS). During a recent ceremony at the Queen of The Rosary Secondary School in Nsukka, approximately twenty deserving students received cash assistance to support their registration for the National Examination Council (NECO). These students were selected from various schools within the Nsukka zone.
In his inaugural address, Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Faustinus Ugwuanyi, the founder of YDSS, represented by Dr. Mrs. Theresa Ugwuanyi, highlighted the numerous challenges faced by society that have compounded life’s difficulties, particularly for the less privileged. This reinforced his commitment to making a difference, specifically in the realms of education and skills acquisition.
The Special Guest of Honour, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the Enugu State Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Poverty Reduction, represented by Mr. Uchenna Ozomgbachi, commended the founders for their thoughtful initiative. He encouraged the beneficiaries to fully utilise this opportunity to improve their lives.
Other speakers, including Rev. Fr. Valentine Idoko, the administrator of QRSS Nsukka; the school principal, Mrs. Orby Odo; and His Lordship Chinyere Abba, also praised the organisers for their timely and impactful support to the students. The foundation was officially unveiled, and the board of trustees was inaugurated.
Meanwhile, several beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the foundation for such a rare opportunity.
Additionally, the event coincided with the eightieth birthday celebration of Ezinne Margaret Ugwuanyi, the mother of the foundation’s founder and matriarch of the Ugwuany family of Nru, Nsukka. The organisers surprised her with a birthday celebration that included the cutting of a beautifully decorated cake, heartfelt tributes and eulogies, along with the presentation of gifts from her children, friends, guests, and well-wishers.
