Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed has expressed his readiness to collaborate with the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, to restore good governance in Nigeria.
“We will unite, close ranks, and ensure good governance in our country. We will provide a strong, informed opposition with clear visions and timelines, working diligently to rescue and recover our nation,” Mohammed stated on Thursday in Bauchi.
He spoke following a consultation visit from Obi at the state’s Presidential Lodge, where the two engaged in a closed-door meeting for over three hours before addressing the media.
The Bauchi Governor noted that their discussions extended beyond political, religious, or tribal divides, focusing on how they could work together to combat poverty and criminality.
“We talked about the challenges faced by each state, and I deeply appreciate Obi’s role as the leader of the opposition. Whether we like it or not, he currently holds that position in Nigeria.
“I want to clarify, to silence the doubters and the naysayers, that I am committed to working alongside Peter Obi.
“Our collaboration sends a strong message that will resonate, as all our colleagues in the PDP governors’ forum are supportive of this journey.
“We are uniting to work together, regardless of party affiliation, region, religion, or any other differences,” Mohammed affirmed.
In his remarks, Obi explained that he sought to meet with Governor Mohammed to discuss pressing national issues, given his position as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum and his influence in Nigeria’s politics.
“This meeting is a consultation that will pave the way for ongoing discussions about the future of our country.
“We must address the challenges facing the North, and I conveyed to the governor that the North is crucial if we are to succeed in this country.
“There is significant poverty in Nigeria, and we must tackle this issue. Until we solve poverty, we cannot meaningfully address criminality,” he emphasised.
Obi further stated that the country must make substantial investments in key sectors to lift people out of poverty, thereby reducing crime in society.
