The Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev. Godfrey Onah, has praised the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, for what he described as a significant improvement in the security of lives and property within the state.
He also lauded Mbah’s infrastructural developments and the overall rapid progress of the state, calling him a trailblazer in governance.
Bishop Onah spoke at a surprise birthday dinner organised in Mbah’s honour by his aides and admirers from various political parties and religious denominations, celebrating his 53rd birthday in Enugu on Monday evening.
The event was attended by former governors Sullivan Chime and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as well as Senator Okey Ezea representing Enugu North Senatorial District and Hon. Dennis Agbo, Member for Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, both of the Labour Party, alongside several opposition leaders and representatives from various religious organisations. Bishop Onah commended Mbah for acknowledging the contributions of his predecessors and for his inclusive approach to governance.
“Building on the achievements of all leaders in this state, Gov. Mbah has consolidated their efforts.
“If you don’t know how to handle security, come to Enugu State. You are performing remarkably well in this regard.
“We are all here to pray for you to continue your excellent work,” he stated.
Rev. Monsignor Obiora Ike, a respected Catholic priest, teacher, and scholar, also praised the governor for maintaining the state’s security and peace, pledging his unwavering support and commitment to provide honest counsel to Mbah.
“It’s notable that the previous governor, another former governor, and the current governor are sitting together, side by side. This speaks volumes. Your demeanour and humility make this possible. Others might insist, ‘I will be the sole ruler,’ but that is not who you are or what you represent,” Monsignor Ike, who is also a professor, remarked.
In their goodwill message, the Enugu State Caucus of the House of Representatives, comprising members from the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, praised the governor’s performance and leadership style.
“We proudly support your commendable efforts in transforming our state through your model of inclusive governance.
“We wish you many happy returns, along with divine wisdom and guidance as you oversee the affairs of our beloved state,” the Caucus stated.
Likewise, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party governorship candidate in the 2023 election, expressed his commendation for Mbah and prayed for God’s continued wisdom and grace to guide his leadership.
In response, Governor Mbah expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people and leaders of the state who transcended political and other divides to surprise him and sustain their support for his administration, promising that he would not let them down.
“In October 2022, we outlined our plans and vision, assuring Ndi Enugu that we would make Enugu State the premier destination for business, investment, leisure, and living.
“We also committed to growing our economy exponentially and eradicating poverty, which drives our grassroots and inclusive development approach, ensuring no one is left behind.
“We vowed to serve with every fibre of our being; I stand before you this evening to reaffirm that commitment: I will not let you down. We will honour your trust and serve you wholeheartedly,” Mbah assured.
