The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an application from the federal government to protect the identities of witnesses set to testify against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Trial judge James Omotosho approved the application after the government’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), presented an ex parte motion in court.

Mr Awomolo explained that the protection of the witnesses’ identities was essential for security reasons, given that the charges against Kanu relate to terrorism. He stated, “The identities of the witnesses needed to be protected for security reasons,” and requested that their names be kept confidential to safeguard their safety.

Kanu Agabi, also a SAN and former Attorney-General of the Federation, represented Kanu in the proceedings and did not oppose the application. However, he did seek a similar level of cooperation from the federal government regarding a future bail application for Kanu.

Following the arguments, Judge Omotosho granted the request from Mr Awomolo.

In related developments, the first prosecution witness, identified as PWAAA, has commenced their testimony as the prosecution formally opened its case against Mr Kanu.
