In a bold move aimed at enhancing accountability and operational efficiency, the Commissioner of Police for Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has delivered a stern warning to supervisory officers within the command.
A statement by SP Daniel Ndukwe, Police Public Relations Officer for Enugu State Command said the warning was given during a recent Strategic Conference with senior officers. CP Giwa stressed the importance of redoubling efforts to justify their postings or risk immediate replacement.
“This directive is not just a warning; it is an operational standard we must adhere to,” CP Giwa declared, emphasising that Divisional Police Officers, Heads of Tactical Squads, and other unit leaders must demonstrate effective leadership and maintain discipline.
The Commissioner outlined a new performance management strategy that “combines rigorous accountability with meaningful incentives, effectively implementing a carrot-and-stick approach.
“Officers who fail to meet operational targets or showcase effective leadership will face swift sanctions. In contrast, those who excel will be recognised and rewarded, fostering a culture of excellence within the ranks.
“The people of Enugu deserve nothing less than your utmost dedication,” Giwa asserted. “Those who cannot meet these expectations have no place in leadership within the command.”
Highlighting the critical need to rebuild public trust in law enforcement, the Commissioner stated, “The era of complacency is over. Every officer must prove daily that they deserve their position.”
He added that these reforms are part of the Enugu State Police Command’s ongoing transformation initiative which aligns with the vision and mission set forth by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM.
