In a proactive move to foster peace and development within the community, the Enugu East Local Government Area has inaugurated the Enugu East Land Mediation Centre.
The initiative was formalised on Wednesday by the Executive Chairman, Engr. Pst. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, who signed the bill into law during a ceremony attended by dignitaries and local officials.
“The establishment of this centre is crucial, especially given the rising significance of land as a vital asset globally,” Chairman Anike stated. “With the influx of residents and investors into our urban area, we have seen a corresponding increase in land disputes that often escalate into lengthy court battles.”
The newly established mediation centre aims to provide an alternative dispute resolution platform, allowing individuals to address land-related issues amicably without the need for court intervention.
“I am optimistic that this centre will significantly reduce land disputes, conserve our resources, and foster better relationships among our community members,” Anike added.
During the event, Anike extended an open invitation to anyone experiencing land disputes to approach the centre for assistance, assuring them of a peaceful resolution process that would safeguard their investments.
Prominent figures at the inauguration included Justice Okey Anike of the Enugu State High Court, who praised the initiative, stating, “This mediation centre will serve as a beacon of hope for many who have felt trapped in protracted disputes.”

Barrister S.I.D Iyida (Ph.D.), Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Mediators and Conciliators (CIMC) in Enugu State, echoed similar sentiments: “This is a commendable step towards promoting peace and reducing the backlog of cases in our courts.”
The event also featured the announcement of a new executive bill by Mr. Okoh Christopher Anike, Clerk of the Enugu East Legislative Council. The proposed legislation seeks to establish a framework for community administration in the Nike area, covering aspects such as Power of Attorney and electoral processes, with a public hearing expected soon.
The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Deputy Chairman Engr. Kingsley Obinna Anike, Leader of the Enugu East Legislative Council Hon. Obumneme Obed Eke, and other community leaders, all recognising the significance of the mediation centre in advancing effective governance and community cohesion.
With the launch of the Enugu East Land Mediation Centre, local officials are hopeful that it will mark a turning point in the management of land disputes, ultimately contributing to a more peaceful and prosperous Enugu East Local Government Area.
