The Rivers Progressive Alliance (RPA) has issued a strong rebuttal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister’s assertion that the recent walkout by Rivers women during an empowerment event was a reaction to the appointment of the Sole Administrator instigated by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
RPA in a statement by their director of Media, Hon. Derefaka Ajubo clarified that the walkout was driven by deeper concerns regarding representation and respect for local leadership.
The walkout occurred at a programme honouring Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of Nigeria’s President, where the introduction of Mrs. Ibas, the wife of the Rivers State Sole Administrator, was met with discontent. The women expressed that this move undermined the longstanding efforts of Lady Valerie Siminalayi Fubara, the wife of the suspended Governor of Rivers State, who has been a pivotal figure in advocating for women’s empowerment in the region.
In response to the FCT Minister’s claims, Ajubo stated, “Let me be clear: the protest is not about the appointment of the Sole Administrator. It is about the recognition and respect for our local leaders, particularly Lady Valerie, who has tirelessly worked for the empowerment of Rivers women. We feel that the introduction of someone unfamiliar to us as a leader was a misstep that does not reflect our sentiments.”
Ajubo further emphasised the importance of genuine representation, saying, “The women of Rivers State are committed to the ideals of the Renewed Hope Initiative, but they also deserve to have their voices heard and their leaders acknowledged. This protest is a call for unity and respect, not a reaction to political appointments.”
