A Kano High Court has sentenced four men—Nafi’u Isah, Haruna Ya’u, Nadabo Mohammed, and Sa’adu Musa—to 40 years and six months in prison each for their involvement in armed robbery and attempted murder.
The defendants were found guilty on a four-count charge that included criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, attempted murder, and causing grievous harm.
In delivering the judgement, Justice Usman Na’abba stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. Consequently, he sentenced each convict to six months’ imprisonment for conspiracy, 20 years for armed robbery, 10 years for attempted murder, and five years for causing grievous hurt.
Justice Na’abba ordered the convicts to pay the complainant, Haruna Shehu, a total of N650,000, the amount they had stolen from him, or face an additional five years in prison. The sentences will run concurrently.
During the proceedings, Prosecution Counsel Mr Lamido Abba-Sorondinki outlined that the crimes occurred on May 1, 2022, in Kunkurawa Village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano. He detailed that at approximately 1:00 am, the convicts conspired with weapons, including guns, sticks, and cutlasses, to break into Shehu’s home.
“The defendants beat the complainant and members of his family, causing grievous injury to his son, Ado Haruna Shehu. The convicts also robbed Shehu and his family of N650,000,” he reported.
The prosecution presented six witnesses and various exhibits to substantiate their case against the convicts, who maintained their innocence throughout the trial.
Mr Abba-Sorondinki pointed out that their actions violated several provisions of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State, 1991. In their defence, the Defence Counsel, Mr Sani Idris, called on the convicts to testify on their behalf.
