The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that the Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC) will be the first project inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu to mark his second year in office.
Wike made this announcement following an inspection of the project in Abuja on Friday, stating that the inauguration will serve as a celebration of Tinubu’s tenure. He commended Julius Berger, the contractor responsible for the comprehensive renovation of the centre, for the high quality of work completed thus far.
He highlighted the contractor’s adherence to the agreed timeline for the project’s completion. Wike noted that prior to Tinubu’s directive for the centre to be rehabilitated and upgraded to a true international standard, it had been in a poor state since its construction in 1991. “It is surprising that no one had attempted to give it a facelift until now,” he remarked.
Wike characterised this development as a prime example of “effective leadership”, asserting that “no responsible leader would allow such a facility to be referred to as an international conference centre, given its deplorable state.”
“Today, the centre has been transformed into a world-class facility, thanks to Mr President’s leadership and support. That’s what leadership is all about,” he stated.
In addition, the minister inspected the ongoing extension of Obafemi Awolowo Way (N5), from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III, which is also being executed by Julius Berger. He expressed optimism that the first phase of this project would be among those inaugurated by Tinubu during the anniversary celebrations.
Wike praised the contractor for their commitment to the project timeline, stating, “their commitment to excellence was evident in every aspect of the project, from the equipment used to the skilled labour employed. This project is a testament to the renewed hope agenda, and we’re thrilled to see it come to fruition,” he concluded.
