The Anambra State Police Command has announced the rearrest of Ikemefuna Ossai, a key suspect in the abduction and murder of the late Hon. Justice Azuka, the lawmaker representing Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Ossai, who previously escaped from police custody, was apprehended on May 7 in Asaba, Delta State, following what authorities described as a “painstaking and intelligence-led operation.” The manhunt reportedly stretched across several Nigerian states and into a neighbouring West African country before the suspect was tracked down.

Police said Ossai attempted to evade arrest when confronted by operatives but was swiftly subdued. He sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the operation.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Command has since briefed the family of the late lawmaker and leaders of the Anambra State House of Assembly. The Commissioner of Police also reportedly expressed regret over the operational failures that led to Ossai’s initial escape from custody.

According to SP Ikenga, actionable intelligence obtained from the suspect is now supporting ongoing investigations aimed at apprehending other fugitives and dismantling the criminal network responsible for the crime.

“The Anambra State Police Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety and security of Ndi Anambra,” he added.

The late Hon. Justice Azuka was abducted and later found murdered in a case that sparked widespread outrage and heightened calls for justice across the state.
