The Enugu State Government has intensified efforts to ensure universal access to public water supply across the city through its newly launched Water Last-Mile Connection Project.

In a statement released on Friday, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the initiative, driven by the Enugu State Water Corporation, aims to connect all households in the metropolis to the state’s central water infrastructure.

“All landlords, caretakers, and tenants in Enugu are hereby directed to grant unhindered access to officials and accredited agents of the Water Corporation for the purpose of connecting their properties to the water infrastructure,” Prof. Onyia stated.

The SSG also issued a strong warning against illegal constructions on water utility lines and public rights-of-way. He noted that such developments are in violation of state laws and obstruct vital infrastructure projects.

“Residents who have constructed buildings or structures on water utility lines or public right-of-way are reminded that such developments are illegal. These individuals are also required to grant full and undisrupted access to Water Corporation teams,” he said.

Prof. Onyia stressed that any form of obstruction will be treated as a serious violation and would attract enforcement actions.

“This initiative is a key part of the government’s effort to deliver safe, clean, and reliable water to every home, while also restoring and protecting public infrastructure for the benefit of all,” he added.

The government further warned that failure to comply with the directive will attract sanctions as stipulated by law, urging residents to cooperate fully with the water connection teams.

The Water Last-Mile Connection Project represents a significant milestone in the state’s broader vision to extend portable water access to all homes in Enugu’s capital city.
