The Nigerian Army has refuted recent media reports suggesting that a protest erupted in Enugu following the alleged discovery of a live explosive device on a farmland in Ochima, Udi Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on June 5, 2025, by Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Eromosele Unuakhalu, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters 82 Division, the Army described the reports as “unsubstantiated, misleading, and lacking any credible verification.”

“It is pertinent to state that the reports are unsubstantiated, misleading, and lack any credible verification. Preliminary findings indicate that no such protest occurred, and the narrative appears to be designed to incite unwarranted fear and tension within Ochima and adjoining communities in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State,” the statement said.

Reassuring the public of their safety, the Army emphasized that standard protocols are always followed in handling any form of explosive ordnance.

“The Nigerian Army remains fully committed to the safety and security of all citizens. We have standard operating procedures in place for the employment, handling, and disposal of explosive ordnance whenever necessary, which entails checks and safety measures in collaboration with relevant security agencies,” Unuakhalu explained.

He further assured residents that there was “no immediate threat or cause for alarm in relation to the unfounded story,” based on the Army’s investigations.

The statement also appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified information and urged media professionals to uphold journalistic integrity.

“We urge members of the public to remain calm and refrain from disseminating false or unverified information. We also call on media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of responsible journalism by verifying information with relevant authorities prior to publication. The spread of inaccurate reports not only misinforms the public but also attempts to threaten collective efforts to maintain stability,” the Army said.

The 82 Division reiterated its commitment to continued collaboration with civil authorities to ensure peace and security in Enugu State and across the South East region.
