Hoodlums launched a deadly assault on a local vigilante office in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, in the early hours of Thursday, June 5, 2025, killing one security operative and setting five operational vehicles ablaze.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the attackers stormed the vigilante base, opened fire, and engaged the operatives in a gun duel. During the exchange, one of the security operatives sustained fatal injuries. The assailants also set parts of the office on fire before fleeing the scene.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, condemned the brutal attack and emphasized the need for swift justice.
“This cowardly attack is unacceptable. We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to book and will not tolerate any attempt to destabilize the peace in our communities,” CP Orutugu stated.
He further called on members of the Umunze community and surrounding areas to support the ongoing police-led joint security operations by providing useful information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
“The Police-led Joint Security Force has taken over the scene and commenced a full-scale operation. We urge residents to collaborate with us to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are held accountable,” SP Ikenga added.
Authorities assured the public that the security situation is under control and pledged to keep citizens updated as investigations continue.
