Former President Goodluck Jonathan has set off a wave of speculation over a possible return to politics following a cryptic Instagram post on Wednesday that many interpreted as a veiled criticism of the current administration—and a subtle nod to 2027.

Sharing a solemn photo of himself looking downward during a past encounter with former U.S. President Donald Trump, Jonathan captioned the image:
“Since our current leaders are pretending to sleep, we pray that we will get our good leadership back in 2027; your choice will determine the betterment of our future.”

The post, which has attracted over 3,800 likes, sparked a flurry of comments from Nigerians, both supportive and skeptical, with many interpreting it as a political signal.

One enthusiastic follower declared: “Your Excellency sir, we are 100% with you.”

Another commented: “Good, better, best president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria till date… May your days be longer than that of Methuselah, sir.”

However, not all the feedback was favorable. A dissenting voice wrote: “Oga we sha no want you again. Peace is our union.”

Another user questioned the authenticity of the post, asking: “Has this account been hacked?”

Some took a more humorous approach. One commenter quipped: “Sir, I’m wondering why you were looking down when you took this picture with Donald, while he looked up into your eye.”

While Jonathan stopped short of naming any political party or explicitly declaring his intent, his closing remark—“Your choice will determine the betterment of our future”—has been widely read as a call to political vigilance in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

The post has reignited national debate about the former president’s legacy and whether he should re-enter the political arena. As the conversation continues across social media, Nigerians are left to wonder: was this merely reflective musing, or the beginning of a carefully crafted comeback?
