The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, on Friday, July 4, 2025, held its maiden congress at the newly built High Chief Government Ekpemupolo Press Centre in Warri, Delta State.

The congress brought together stakeholders who deliberated on pressing issues affecting journalists and the broader media landscape.

In a communique issued at the end of the congress, the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel commended Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) and its chairman, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for constructing and equipping the press centre.

The chapel described the new edifice as a “befitting facility” that will enhance the work of media practitioners and promote credible journalism in Nigeria.

“We commend Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) and its chairman, High Chief Government Owiezide Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo, for this remarkable gesture. The facility will no doubt improve the performance of journalists and advance the cause of credible journalism,” the communique read.

The congress also expressed gratitude to the Managing Director of TSSNL, High Chief Kestin Pondi, and Dr. Paul Benenimibo, Registrar of the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, for their efforts in facilitating the project. They further acknowledged the contributions of the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and the Orosuen of Okere-Urhobo Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oghenechuko Morris Eyekpimi.

However, the congress raised concerns about the poor condition of the access road to the press centre and appealed to Governor Oborevwori to intervene and reconstruct it.

The chapel also called on the Warri Uvwie Environs Development Agency (WUEDA) to expedite ongoing road and drainage work at Eboh and other adjoining streets around Okumagba Avenue.

The congress decried the persistent flooding affecting parts of Warri and urged the state government to take swift action to address the problem.

While applauding the governor for the ongoing flyover projects at PTI Junction, Enerhen Junction, and DSC Roundabout in Uvwie, the union urged the contractor, Julius Berger, to carry out remedial work on the Effurun Roundabout/DSC Roundabout stretch to ease the suffering of road users.

The communique was signed by members of the drafting committee: Ebenezer Adurokiya, Okpare Theophilus Onojeghen, and Matthew Omonigho.
